Led by Sanyukt Kisan Morcha Non-Political, a 51-member group of farmers marching on foot from the martyrdom site of Shaheed Shubhkaran Singh at Khanauri border to Jantar Mantar in Delhi is being stopped by the Haryana BJP government through barricading and heavy deployment of force. In protest against this crushing of the constitutional rights of working people of the country to hold peaceful demonstrations, the 51 marchers will stage a bare-bodied protest at the barricades on 19th August.Farmer leaders said that both the Central and Haryana BJP governments are trampling upon the rights given by the Indian Constitution to farmers, laborers and common people to protest peacefully for their rights. This 51-member foot march was only going to Delhi’s Jantar Mantar to raise demands already agreed to by the Centre earlier, and to demand that agriculture be kept out of the ongoing India-US Free Trade Agreement. To stop them, the Haryana government has built walls on the highway as if people from some foreign country were entering Delhi. This proves that the corporate-friendly BJP government does not have a problem with farmers’ tractor-trolleys, but with the farmers themselves. By rushing to implement the India-US Free Trade Agreement by bowing before America, the Modi government is signing a “death warrant” for farmers. If this agreement is implemented, farmers will not even have clothes left on their bodies.Therefore, on 19th August the 51 marchers will reach the barricades put up by the Haryana government and protest bare-bodied against this “death warrant” FTA and against the step-motherly treatment being meted out to the people of the country.
