About nine acres of wheat crop gutted into fire on Friday night in village Devi Wala of Kotkapura block .

Though the official cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, the locals said that the fire started because of a spark on a pole on a power line alongside the Devi Wala to village Panjgrain Kalan village.

“The fire broke out due to a spark and it went unnoticed for some time. As soon as the fire spreaded and its flames were seen, the locals rushed to douse the fire. Even the people from adjoining villages as sirsari,Aulakh,Panjgrain Kalan,Bir Sikhan Wala aside Devi wala village rushed to the spot along with the tractors, hooked with cultivators, rotavators and disks to plough the fields to stop the fire from spreading ahead,’ said a Devi Wala resident.

As per the information, the 2.5 acres of standing wheat crop of Bohar Singh son of Pritam Singh,3.5 acres of Kuldeep Singh,who had hired 7 acres of land from Tejinder Singh of village Bir Sikhan Wala and about 3 acres of land of farmer Meet Singh, who had also land on contract from one Jarnail Singh and others burnt into ashes.

The locals immediately rushed to the spot and doused the fire with their own tractors etc.

Apart from it, about 10 acres of crop residual has been burnt.

Kultar Singh, local MLA and speaker of Punjab Vidhan Sabha said that a Girdawari has been ordered and government compensation would be provided to the affected farmers.
