crucial meeting of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) was held at Kisan Bhawan, Chandigarh, under the leadership of National Convenor Jagjit Singh Dallewal to discuss pressing agrarian and social issues in Punjab.

The meeting was attended by Satnam Singh Behru, President Indian Farmer Association, Amarjit Singh Rara, President BKU Azad, Sukhdev Singh Bhojraj, President Kisan Te Jawan Bhalai Union Punjab, Satnam Singh Bagarian, President Pagri Sambhal Lehar, Malkiat Singh Sahi, leader Doaba Kisan Welfare Committee, Sonu Aulakh, President Lok Insaaf Morcha, Malkeet Singh, leader BKU Malwai, Rajinder Singh Jaffarwal, President BKU Majha and Jasbir Singh Sidupur among others.

Sharing details with the press after the meeting, Dallewal said early varieties of Basmati and short-duration PR paddy have already started arriving as per the dates announced by the government, while the main paddy crop is currently at the grain-filling stage which requires maximum water.

“Due to the failure of Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd, the power supply for agriculture has been reduced to just three hours instead of eight. This will reduce the yield and cause discolouration of grains. Farmers who are already under economic distress will face another economic blow,” Dallewal alleged.

Launching a sharp attack on the state government, Dallewal alleged that Punjab is being run as a police state.

“The government is following the path of German dictator Adolf Hitler by using force against those demanding their rights. We strongly condemn the police excesses on Mohan Singh Shero Sunam, Gulzar Singh Toor Banjara, Dirba, Chamkaur Singh Kakkarwal Dhuri and others who were only questioning the government on the drug menace. This action has proved that the state has been handed over to the police.”

He said that since March 30, farmers under the banner of SKM (Non-Political) and BKU Ekta Sidupur have been staging continuous dharnas in front of PADB banks for their legitimate demands.

“Even after agreeing to our demands in meetings, the government, instead of implementing them, is trying to torpedo the dharnas through police,” he said.

On the central issue, Dallewal said Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan recently held a meeting with some “so-called farmer organisations” to finalise the Seed Amendment Bill 2025.

“These are government-sponsored organisations. The Minister should meet the real struggling organisations who fought on Delhi borders, then at Shambhu and Khanauri borders and across the country to save farmers’ interests, and discuss every bill related to agriculture,” he demanded.

Key Demands and Announcements:

Dallewal warned the state government to immediately ensure 8 hours of uninterrupted power supply for agriculture.Other demands include:- Return of blank cheques taken by banks from farmers and immediate implementation of OTS scheme as promised- Compensation for goods looted at Shambhu and Khanauri morchas- Fulfilment of promises made to the family of the Hari Nau village suicide victim family- Compensation for losses suffered by farmers at Shambhu and Khanauri borders- Exclusion of agriculture, dairy, poultry farming, fisheries and allied occupations from the India-US trade deal.

Farmer leader Sukhdev Singh Bhojraj demanded that paddy procurement should start immediately instead of from October 1 as early varieties have already started arriving in mandis.

He said procurement must be done on full weight and full rate to save farmers from loot.On stubble burning, he said crop residue contributes only 1-3% to pollution.

Small farmers who do not have machinery to manage stubble are forced to burn it as they have not received financial compensation and machinery as per orders of the National Green Tribunal and Supreme Court.

He demanded an immediate stop to red entries, fines and FIRs against farmers.

Leaders Amarjit Singh Rara and Satnam Singh demanded that the FRP of sugarcane be fixed at Rs 600 per quintal, pending dues of last year be released with interest, and future payments be made in cash.

The Morcha has given a call to all justice-loving, religious, social, student, employee and public organisations to unite against drugs and police repression and attend a meeting at Kisan Bhawan, Chandigarh on September 27.

The leaders also announced that on September 19, memorandums will be submitted at all tehsil and district headquarters and effigies of the government will be burnt in protest.
