The farmers, backed by Bharti Kisan Union Sidhupur Ekta ,have been spearheading a campaign against the Punjab Land mortgage bank Faridkot allegedly due to some arbitrary actions of the bank.
The stage protest began after two brothers from village Hari Naoun committed suicide by jumping against a train.
“Our protest began on March 30 and till date,it has reached at about 70th day.We have received about 139 complaints from the farmers against the bank. Now we are going have a meeting at higher level tomorrow,’ said Bohar Singh Dhaliwal, district president of BKU Sidhupur Ekta.
“The bank retains the cheques from the farmers who avail the loans from it.We want to get all pre signed cheques back. Next, some of the farmers had allegedly paid off their loans. But the bank again showed some outstanding loans against them. Then there was some manager from the bank.He had allegedly told some farmer that he credit Rs 30000 to his account and his account would be settled. There is also a complaint against him and action is being taken against him. There is complaint from a farmer from Kotkapura. The bank had filed a case of recovery against him.when the farmer learnt that there is a case against him, he contacted the bank and paid all the outstanding loan.He paid the amount in 2025, but the bank did not withdraw the case.In 2026, arrest warrants were issued against him.In another case, which was settled in Lok Adalat, and the bank again demanded a large amount from the farmer,’ claimed Bohar Singh, district President of BKU Sidhupur Ekta.
However, punjabexpress.com does not independently verify these allegations.
“we have fixed a meeting on Wednesday morning. There would be a senior bank official, a representative from the police and the district administration apart from a representative from the union. We have got about 139 complaints and 10 cases are supposed to be decided to be heard per day,” said Bohar Singh.
A very senior officer of the bank, under whose jurisdiction the Faridkot bank falls, refused to comment on the issue.”I am not authorised to speak to the media,” he said.
However,it has been confirmed that the meeting is certainly going to take place tomorrow morning.
Rahul Chaba,DC Faridkot, when contacted, said that he would get all the issues checked.
“You had better speak to the senior back officers in this regard,” he added.
